第五章,天地與聖人(Lao Zi Chapter five - Heaven and the Sage)

"天地不仁,以萬物為芻狗。聖人不仁,以百姓為芻狗。"
Nature is unkind: It treats the creation like sacrificial straw-dogs. The Sage is not benevolent: He regards the people like sacrificial straw-dogs.
*Nature and the Sage are not benevolent for they have to act according to the doctrine of naturalism, cause and effect without bias and with justice. If people have done evil deeds, they have to face resulting consequence.
天地本無為,不會有自私的仁,它知道有生必有死。所以只是提供一個生長的環境,讓萬物在這個環境中自給自足、自生自滅,而不會去干預萬物的生長。並不是天地將萬物當成祭祀的草狗一樣,用過之後就不要了。
聖人也如同天地一樣,不會存有自私的仁,他們平等對待百姓,博愛慈悲一切。他們包容生活中必然存在的好、壞,而只提供一個讓人民可以自然發展的良好環境,不會過度去干預人民的生活。因為他們知道,天地造化,一切只決定於自己招來因果禍福,並不是聖人將百姓當成祭祀的草狗一樣,用過之後就不要了。

"天地之間,其猶橐籥乎!虛而不屈,動而愈出。"
How the universe is like a bellows! Empty, but it gives a supply that never ends, The more it works out, the more it can bring out. 
天地之間果真就像一俱風箱一樣!風箱內空虛無物,愈動則風愈出,猶如天地間的空虛一樣,雖空無一物,可就是因為它的空性,俱足萬能,在不停的活動運行中生出了世間萬物。生命的作用,常在於一動一靜之間。要善加把握,善加運用。

"多言數窮,不如守中。"
By speaking too much our wit may be exhausted. It would be better to keep to the core or centre.
*Core or centre: the original true self of human being.
言多必失,必有理屈之時。因此,天地與聖人的心境是清靜無為的。不像芸芸眾生,只知精於舌辯,能言善道,自以為是。精於腦力,窮其巧智,自以為能,反而遠離大道。不如清靜無為,守於中庸大道,自然就能合乎規律,融入宇宙本源。
